Why Pipeline Stages Need Hard Definitions
Most consulting firms have a pipeline. Few have stage definitions anyone could write down. “Proposal” means one thing to the partner who sent it and another to the associate updating the CRM, and “Onboarding” can mean anything from “we signed yesterday” to “we’ve been stalled for three weeks.”
That ambiguity is expensive. Forecasts overstate what’s actually close. Deals stall with no one accountable for moving them. And nobody can say with confidence where the firm actually loses business — because “stuck” isn’t a diagnosis. A specific stage, with a specific trigger that didn’t fire, is.
